Tips

Feeding your lawn:

Lawns need food too. Lawn Fertilizers are a great way to put minerals into your lawn to get a healthier looking lawn. Essential minerals have vital functions to perform in plant growth - the single most important being Nitrogen (N) and grass with adequate nitrogen shows up good green color.

Phosphorous (P) affects all grass plant growth and is particularly helpful in the germination of seeds. Potassium (K) is also an essential element, although its function in grass is rather complex. Basically all we need to know is that it is linked to the general good health of the grass, helping it to resist diseases.

These three minerals (N,P and K) are the basis of most brands of lawn fertilizers although there are other nutrients the grass plant needs, but often only in minute quantities.

Nitrogenous lawn fertilizers are Spring/Summer fertilizers and should be used only during the growing season - look on the pack to see the percentages of nutrients and a typical spring/summer one will look like this - 9%N, 7%P and 7%K. Autumn/winter fertilizers will contain only small amounts of nitrogen eg. 3%N, 10%P and 10%K

If you are looking for a pre-seeding fertilizer (if you are starting from scratch and seeding a new lawn) it should be in the region of 6%N, 9%P and 6%K When applying lawn fertilizers, try to make the spread as even as possible to ensure even growth and color and follow the manufacturers instructions carefully.

Weeds:

The best methods for controlling weeds is to treat them early in their life cycle. That means applying herbicide to grassy weeds, such as crabgrass, in early spring and to broadleaf weeds, like dandelions, in the fall. But don't just shut your eyes and expect them to go away. Hit them early!

The best defense against weeds is a healthy lawn. By maintaining your lawn on a regular basis, the grass will eventually overtake the weeds. A good lawn, so to speak, will weed out the weeds! Love Your Lawn can take care of this for you!

Tree pruning:

To encourage the development of a strong, healthy tree, consider the following guidelines when pruning.

Prune first for safety, next for health, and finally for aesthetics.

Never prune trees that are touching or near utility lines; instead consult your local utility company.

Use the following decision guide for size of branches to be removed:
  • under 5 cm diameter - go ahead,
  • between 5 and 10 cm diameter - think twice
  • greater than 10 cm diameter - have a good reason.
